| Glass
sculptor Ramon Orlina exhibits his recent works in a solo
show titled "Translucent Life," which features 18
new interpretations of life forms in glass.
The works will include his new martial art forms of human
figures in various poses of the ancient discipline, as a homage
to Taiwaneses sculptor Ju Ming. Also included are recent works
on birds, foliage, lovers, family and the all-popular "Ning-Ning"
series.
In the show, the sculptures will continue to enthrall the
viewer with their fluid lines, sleek bends or sharp angles;
and with their polished, smoothed or textured surfaces which
trap light to create optical illusions. In this sense, Orlina's
glass sculptures, whether abstract or figurative, are never
static masses.
"Translucent Life" marks the culmination of a productive
year in which Orlina participated in shows abroad such as
"Sculptures in Chianti" in Siena, Italy; "Steninge
World Exhibition of Art Glass" in Steninge Palace, Sweden;
and "The Contemporary Asian Art Fair" in Singapore.
In his 27 years as an artist, Orlina has exhibited in many
parts of Asia, Europe and the United States. He was conferred
the ASEAN Awards for Visual Arts in 1993 by the ASEAN Committee
on Culture and Information in Brunei and in 1994, he received
the 3rd ASEAN Achievement Awards for Visual Arts in Kuala
Lumpur from the ASEAN Business Forum.
He has won in numerous international competitions, most notably
second prize at the Toyamura International Sculpture Bienale
in 1999 and first prize in the sculpture category of the II
International Biennial of Basketball in the Fine Arts in 2000
held in Madrid, Spain.
The exhibit runs until Nov. 30 at Gallery Nine, SM Megamall.
