Where art thou?
Ramon Orlina isn't what you'd call an emotional
man, but earlier in his career the 63-year-old artist
had good reason to cry and did.
His $300,000 work, Wings of Victory, made up of 67 suspended
steel birds weighing 35kg each, went missing...

Quintessential
Orlina
OMNIUM-GATHERUM By
Miguel Ramos
The Philippine STAR 10/30/2006
Quintessence. Classically,
from "quinta essentia," or the fifth and
highest element of which heavenly bodies are made of in contrast
with
fire, air, water and earth. It is also the essence of a thing
in its purest and most concentrated form containing its rarest
virtue and mostessential constituent. Quintessence is the perfect
example of its kind. In the hands of Ramon Orlina, glass becomes
the medium of sculpture’s quintessence. And in celebrating
his 30th year as an artist....

Mga
Kwentong Galing!
World Class Glass Master
By Chelo S. Aloria
When asked what his middle initial stands for, Ramon G. Orlina
laughingly answered, "Glass!" Well, there's no doubt
he earned such a name being the firstFilipino to master glass
sculpture.
There's only a handful of Filipino artists who use glass as
medium. That's because glass, unlike wood is not an easy material
to carve. But Orlina proves otherwise and can do more than just
carve. He can transform a simple piece of glass into a work
of art through months of cutting, reshaping, and polishing.
As a result, viewers will be able to see the lights trapped
by the glass' unique forms...

Orlina's translucent life OMNIUM-GATHERUM
by Miguel Ramos
Ramon
Orlina is an artist deeply passionate about his art and truly
proud of what he has accomplished. Rightfully so. After all,
it is not every day that one is able to successfully create
a new art form.
Miguel
Ramos: When did you know you had a talent for art?
Ramon
Orlina: I’ve always liked art. I always thought I was
good at drawing. Even when I was young, I already liked to
draw, especially from comics. In my generation everybody read
comics…maybe not people your age anymore…

Ramon
Orlina's translucent life
OMNIUM-GATHERUM by Miguel Ramos
When I
started learning to appreciate art a few years ago, one of
the last things I learned was how to appreciate sculpture
– particularly works that are not explicitly figurative
like many of Ramon Orlina’s pieces. For me, it was easy
to appreciate the beauty of or the skill involved in creating
a sculpture that clearly depicted a person or an object, like
Michelangelo’s David or the stretched figures of Giacometti.
But once the piece tended towards the abstract, I could no
longer understand it...

Heritage
Glass
has a certain magic to Orlina. He states: "First it is a liquid
that has solidified, frozen. There's magic right there. And
then, you don't get tired of looking at glass. If you move
your head just a little, you see it in a different way. It
becomes something else again. The play of light on a piece
can totally transform it".
